But with Gaga missing in action at the American Music Awards this week, rap artist Nicki Minaj quickly stole her crown.

The Your Love singer wore a bizarre dress by Indian designer Manish Arora to the event at the Los Angeles Nokia Theatre.

The coral-coloured dress, from the Spring 2011 collection, features extravagant gold embellishment.

A skeleton-style structure including a ribcage would have made it hard to sit down in.

The Trinadad-born 25-year-old, who released her debut album Pink Friday last week, also sported green dip-dyed hair.

The rapper tried out the new shade of her trademark hairstyle after sticking with hot pink in recent weeks.

While Minaj's style was turning heads on the red carpet, on stage Rihanna's wild new look was the talk of the night.

Perhaps in a bid to steal Madonna's crown as the queen of reinvention, the singer arrived at the American Music Awards last night sporting an Eighties' style perm in her flame-coloured hair.
