'He tried to get away from me!': Russell Brand recalls his awkward encounter Prince Charles

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

Funny guy: Russell Brand greeted fans as he arrived for an appearance on US talk show Live With Regis & Kelly

Russell Brand has plenty of fans across the world, but it seems Prince Charles isn't one of them.

The newlywed comedian, who appeared on US talk show Live With Regis & Kelly to promote new film, The Tempest, claims the royal tried to avoid him at a recent event.

But, as he tells it, he managed to get a good grip Prince Charles' hand - and didn't want to let go.

He told the hosts: 'I did meet Prince Charles. It makes you a bit anxious.

'When you meet someone whose name has got 'Prince' at the start of their name, it's daunting.

'Someone shoved me into the line right at the moment he was meeting.
'I was shoved into him and I saw a moment in his eyes as we shook hands when he realised, "That's that mad comedian".

'And he sort of tried to get away. I had him in a bit of a grip. I was holding on, thinking "This is my moment. I'm not letting him go just yet".

'There was a moment where he was trying to recoil and I heard his wrist click a bit.'
And he told how he embarrassed himself in front of Prince Charles' wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall.

'Because I was panicking I just looked at her and went, 'A Duchess!' I just shouted at her what she was,' Brand said.

He added: 'It's so ridden with protocol it's very difficult to relax.
'You don't want to do the wrong thing and you end up buckling an arthritic wrist.'

Brand, 35, married pop star Katy Perry, 26, in India in October.

He was sporting a wide, sparkly, diamond-encrusted band on his wedding finger and said: 'I like being married, it's very relaxing.'

He dismissed rumours the pair had exchanged gifts of exotic animals as wedding gifts - and said they didn't have a procession of camels at the event.

He added: 'I don't think there were any tiger gate crashers, if there were, I hope they were endorsing a breakfast cereal.'

The Tempest is out now in the US.
